Carolina Panthers coach John Fox – don’t hang up the curtains

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Barry Sanders cooking some dogs for his Mom

Barry Sanders (AP)Sunday is Mother’s day.

You gotta love your Mom!

She brought you into this world. She raised you. Yeah, she raised even you and no one paid her to do it either. Think about it.

Go get her some flowers or something.

Your intrepid author will be visiting Mom today and it will be special.

Mom is getting up there in age, although she rarely admits to being over 29. You would think we might have a quiet afternoon together reminiscing about old times or something.

Not my Mom.

She will probably want to go to a Sports Bar for some Steak and Beer and then maybe back to her apartment for a few glasses a wine, while we discuss everything from sports, to current affairs, to politics, to family happenings, to just about everything.

You guessed it, my Mom is pretty cool!

Guess how cool of a Mom is the wife of Carolina Panthers Coach John Fox?

During his first eight years in the NFL, Panthers coach John Fox and his wife, Robin, moved five times. In 1995, when John was defensive coordinator with the Raiders, Robin told me that every time she hung up curtains in their home, John would change jobs. So she began to be hesitant; should she hang up curtains or not any at all? Robin knew the job might only last as long as it took to buy and furnish a house. And I have to think that she must have been also secretly wondering; if I hang up curtains, will we move? (i.e.) Is hanging curtains a sure sign that we will move? source

And you thought it was just all Campbell’s Chunky soup out there in football land.

What does Steve Mariucci make of this entire Coaches wife being a Mom thing?

Former head coach Steve Mariucci once said that the most difficult job on the team is the coach’s wife. And yet, the coach’s wife is the last one to admit that her role is difficult. She’s the last one to demand a new contract. The last one to claim free agency. The very last one to take credit and spike the ball when she very well knows that without her selfless commitment to him, his job, and their family, the entire team could very well collapse.

Hey, remember Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions? He tells this story of his Mom and makes us remember all the sacrifice that goes with being a Mom.

Shirley was the quiet one, but the rock of the family.

Barry had talked about how his mother, after raising the last child in their large family, returned to school and graduated from Wichita State’s nursing school, and the pride he felt when he attended his mother’s graduation ceremony.

“I was in either the eighth or ninth grade,” Sanders said. “I remember going to her graduation. It was a proud moment.

“I remember how hard my mom worked. She wasn’t just a mother. She wasn’t just a student. She also had to have a job. I remember her leaving out of the house to work the third shift at 11 o’clock, or whatever time she’d leave, and turning the reins over to my older sister.

“She worked hard around the clock. Her graduating college, it was just a very proud moment.” source

So, don’t just sit there. Pick up the phone and tell your Mother how proud you are to be her son or daughter. Take her out to eat or buy her a gift to remind her how special she is. And if Mom is not around anymore, then sit quietly and just meditate on how lucky you are to be here, because of her.

But whatever you do, don’t hang the curtains!

Dude: Not many people have a mother as cool as your’s….she is special.

  2. James says:

    Thanks,
She took me to sports bar, got to see the end of the Pistons loss and consume some steak and a couple of Rolling Rocks.

As usual she sparkled with great conversation.

Wow – - – you’re doing pretty well there James! I probably see mine about 10 days out of every year, and wind up appreciating the 355 other days when I don’t a whole lot more. I know that makes me worthy of hell according to the Bible, but the headaches I end up getting just aren’t worth it.

Got some more music clips you’ll probably like posted. Click on the new ‘Music’ category link to the left on the front page.

I’ve got a David Stern post cooking…it’ll be done in about an hour or so I’d imagine…this Utah-SA series is intriguing to me, so I was able to let a lot slide in lieu of other things this past week, but after this bullshit lottery, I’ve had enough.

  4. James says:

Oden to the JailBreakers. Maybe he will stay in school.

Utah has former Piston Memo Okur. He was awesome with the Pistons, but Joe D is very careful with the cap.

My Mom is cool. Ron B Free knows her personally. In fact she has sort of virtually adopted him.

Sorry about your Mom. Why is it my childhood was the only good and normal one in the world?

DeadI, you gotta keep pulling me over to your blog. My time is so consumed, that it all gets forgotten.

I know exactly what you mean – - – I get like that as well. The email notifications to new posts or comments is all that keeps me informed enough to get back to a thread like this one. The RSS feed for too many sites becomes useless after a while.

Got a new semester of school started now, so my surfing time is cut down. Especially when it comes to sports…though, after this Democratic “compromise” on Iraq, I’m probably going to post on sports and music more often. Too damn depressing…

    Peace – DI

  6. James says:

What are you in school for?

  7. RONNIE E says:

  8. RONNIE E says:

DAVID CARR IS NOT THE ANSWER NETHER IS JAKE BUT WE DON’T HAVE ANYONE ELSE SO PLEASE DON’T LET THE FANS DOWN AGAIN.

  9. Criss Carter says:

FOR THE CAROLINA PATHERS TO COME CLOSE TO A SUPERBOWL THEY WILL HAVE TO FIRE JOHN FOX. LOOK AT IT. YOU HAVE BILL COWHER AND MARTY SHOT. Y WOULDNT YOU GET RID OF HIM HE HAS DONE NOTHING BUT DEGRESS.

  10. James says:

You are right. two great coaches just waiting for the right offer.
Now how about getting my Lions a new GM?
