As I was playing a newer PS3 game with a friend a few weeks ago, we got on the subject of games we have bought but never even played. We came to the conclusion that a lot of games just take too much time investment these days. The "hardcore gamers" of 18-20 years ago were playing Super Mario 3 (beatable in under an hour), Tetris (start at level 1, and you'll reach your top skill level in maybe 30 minutes), and other such games. Now the training missions take a couple hours.

There's too much focus on making "serious" games that have a single, long campaign mode instead of making things fun over and over again with a minimal time commitment. Those are now deemed "casual" games. Make no mistake about it, though, the difference between "hardcore" and "casual" is in the gamer, not the game. If you're as competitive as I am, there's no such thing as a casual game. :)
