Change Smoke Alarm Battery with Clock

This Sunday, March 8, begins Daylight Saving Time. That’s right; it’s that time of year when the government conspires to rob us of one hour’s sleep. I have to admit, though, that it’s nice to have that extra hour of evening sun in the spring and summer. Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour before you retire for the night on Saturday. Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am on Sunday.

The beginning of Daylight Saving Time is also an ideal time to replace the battery in your smoke detector(s). Say Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner, Edward A. Mann, “Smoke detectors are one of the best and cheapest ways to prevent deaths from fires.” He recommends changing the battery twice a year.
He also suggests replacing a smoke alarm if it is more than 10 years old, even if it seems to work properly. The useful life of a smoke detector is usually 10 years.
