NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Charles Rogers waits with his hands out for a handout

Charles Rogers (Photo Courtesy of Ann Arbor News)Still can’t figure out the whole Charles Rogers thing.

For instance, Charles was never injured at MSU where he could not play, never.

Yet there were hints that Rogers would not go over the middle. Ok, maybe he does not like to get hit, but still, he was never injured where he had to miss a game.

Rogers caught touchdown passes as a Michigan State Spartan like there was no tomorrow.

On Saturday, the 6-4, 205-pounder compiled 168 yards of total offense with two touchdowns on just seven touches. His two receiving touchdowns gave him 25 for his career and the all-time MSU record.

Entering the game, Rogers was one shy of Kirk Gibson’s 24 career receiving touchdowns (1975-78). source

In the 2002 season, Charles Rogers had 13 touchdowns in 12 games. Not bad, heh?

Charles Rogers started out like gangbusters with the Detroit Lions, until he broke his clavicle.

• Had his promising rookie campaign cut short after breaking his right clavicle on October 7 during a bye week practice.
• The team’s leading receiver at the time of his injury with 22 catches for 243 yards and three touchdowns in five games.
• Caught touchdowns on his first two NFL receptions in debut vs. Arizona (9/7), becoming the first rookie in Lions history to catch two touchdowns in his first game and the fifth Lions rookie to record two touchdown receptions in a game. source

It all went downhill from there, with more injuries and less playing time, until Charles was released from the Lions. It got weirder after that, with a sudden loss of speed that is unexplained and hands that suddenly did not make all the tough catches.

Charles was timed at 4.28 at MSU and this was witnessed by several reporters. How do you lose that kind of speed?

There were allegations of drugs, mostly due to the Jeff Smoker drug problems. Charles did test positive at the NFL combines, and the Lions did not think it was a problem and still went ahead and drafted him.

Hmm, there were more hints while at MSU, with Charles not wanting to do the punt returning duties. The coaches tried to make it like it was their fault, but it just did not seem that way. You hear things, ya know.

After leaving the Lions, Charles Rogers has had no success catching on anywhere. Now that appears to have changed. Now ESPN.com is reporting that Charles will sign with a CFL team.

“He wants to play again and it’s the best opportunity for him to show he can play again,” Rogers’ agent, Jason Fletcher, is quoted as saying. source

Can anyone explain what has happened to Charles?

Maybe crossing the border will help him regain his form!
