Chirping Expletives in Cricket

Apparently–and I wasn’t aware of this until quite recently–there’s a concept called “other sports blog topics besides baseball and football” and another one called “fan bases beyond New England.” (I’m curious, did anyone else know anything about this? Chalk it up to another memo I didn’t get . . .)

Thankfully, my fellow bloggers on the b5 media Sports Channel are kind enough to enlighten me about the goings-on in other sports. Dinsa, also known as “Six,” is my go-to gal for all the latest on cricket–the world’s second most popular sport. She gave me the dish on India’s ace off-spinner, Harbhajan ”Bhajji” Singh, to whom she refers on her blog as a “hero turned loser” (Ouch! SEE, we at Gossip on Sports are not the only ones who get a little fresh sometimes).

It seems that Bhajji subscribes to the do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do school of etiquette in the gentlemen’s sport. He’s been outspoken in saying that the Australian cricket players are vulgar, forgetting for a moment about this new-fangled thing called a videocamera: He’s been captured on film (more than once) muttering a Hindi word that would make the forehead vein of Miss Manners pop out like a plastic turkey thermometer. I won’t repeat the word here (only because Miss Manners and I are likethis *crosses two fingers tightly*).

Let’s just say that the word has to do with all those jokes about brothers and sisters in the Deep South knowing each other in the biblical sense. (As in, David “knew” Bathsheba and nine months later there was a child. Got it?) So, if a brother knew his sister in that way, what might the brother be called? Hint: it’s a compound word that begins with “sister” and ends with something Miss Manners would slap me (properly, of course) for typing.

Per my understanding from Dinsa, Bhajji might want to take it down a notch regarding the Australians, employ a different “Darn it!”-style word (Jiminy Cricket! comes to mind), or carry around a bottle of Purell for those times when he just gets lost in the moment.

Ah, the snark goddess. Thou art mighty!

  2. She’s amazing, isn’t she?

Now, if I only knew something about Cricket, I could join in all the snarkly love (uh, un-love). But I’m all for potty-mouths – manner-laiden or not. I say, if you can get away with it and don’t fear other-worldy repercussions, have at it. Call me a lady.

Why, thank you, Dinsa! I’m happy to oblige any time you have a dishy cricket tale to share.

And Snarkstress–remember that time we thawed out our hearts together and then refroze them, but they were too close and got stuck together? That was a good time. ;)

  4. Erica says:

Nice post, Jodie. Keep those hypocritical cussers in line.

  5. Jodie says:

We’re all about keeping people in line. Hypocrisy makes for great blog foddah!
