Chris Ferguson challenge
So, if you haven’t seen, Chris Ferguson has an interesting experiment going on over at Full Tilt.
His goal was to start with $0 and build it up to $10,000 by playing (at first) freerolls, and slowly building his stack. By winning small prizes here and there, and slowly increasing his stakes, he’s already turned the $0 into $20,152.67. Pretty awesome.
Here are some of his guidelines the site has listed for what he’ll play:
* He never buys into a cash game or a Sit & Go with more than 5 percent of his total bankroll (there is an exception for the lowest limits: he is allowed to buy into any game with a buy-in of $2.50 or less).
* He doesn’t buy into a multi-table tournament for more than 2 percent of his total bankroll, but he’s allowed to buy into any multi-table tournament that costs $1.
* If at any time during a No-Limit or Pot-Limit cash-game session the money on the table represents more than 10 percent of his total bankroll, he must leave the game when the blinds reach him.
The page linked above has graphs of how his stack has progressed, as well as a column by Jesus on how to manage your bankroll.
I like Jesus.
Just look at his pretty, pretty face.

This is not a new idea. There is a dutch (if my memory serves me right) player who has made quite a bit starting with free rolls. More than chris has (if my memory is right).
The original article about the dutch player was at cardplayer.
But I think what Chris is doing is great for new to advanced players. Money management is huge. Something that quite a few younger, aggressive players do not pay attention to.
I’ve made it up to a couple hundred via freerolls at bodog and then got bored with the grinding.
It is a tough grind.
A guy called Brokerstar is doing something similar on a small site that pays huge rake back which he says make things much easier.
I think his challenge is $50 to $5000 playing No Limit Holdem.
