Okay, so it’s only the last half of October. But if you’re a freelance writer or editor in the United States, you’re already seeing TV ads urging you to buy this gift or that gift for your family and friends.
I’m not playing this year. Oh, I’ll get a token for everyone so there are packages from me under the tree. But the bulk of my Christmas gift money is going to Heifer International. I’ll give gifts of chickens and goats and maybe a portion of an ox in the name of my loved ones. They’ll each get a card explaining the gift and why I’ve chosen to spend my money this way.
It’s part of my personal commitment to a world that works for everyone.

Good for you, Anne. That’s a great gift. Beginning a few years ago, I asked my husband to give a donation to Doctors Without Borders (http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/) in lieu of a gift exchange … so that’s what we do. (Although, I do like gift friends with baked goods, and I also give a few more traditional gifts to family).
