Car buffs across the country rejoice: Chrysler Group LLC, which owns the Dodge Viper business, has decided not to get rid of the iconic sports car and to continue producing Vipers into the unforeseeable future. This marks a dramatic reversal from its stance last summer, when Chrysler announced that it would sell the Viper business and never produce another Viper.
According to a spokesperson for Chrysler, the automaker never received a suitable bid for the Viper brand despite leaving the window of opportunity open for about a year. Although it once belonged to Chrysler, the Dodge Viper brand now belongs to the restructured Chrysler Group after the former auto maker emerged from bankruptcy.
Unless you are willing to drop around $90,000 minimum into a car, you may not be driving a Viper in the foreseeable future. Despite the fact that only about 25,000 Vipers have been sold since 1992, the Viper has become a central marketing piece for both Chrysler and the Dodge brand.
