CIOs! Make Your Company Tech Savvy

tech savvy 1CIO Insight has a wonderfully short but sweet video on the role of the CIO. In it, IT metrics guru Howard Rubin makes a few important points. One has to do with understanding IT economics, including value of projects, and helping the organization be more tech savvy.

This advice flies in the face of other consulting publications in that it does not encourage the CIO to become a strategy development expert. What Rubin does do is encourage the CIO to assist other parts of the organization to understand how technology can help and be valued.

This CIO role also requires an understanding of what the strategies of the company are so that their projects align with the strategies. I must stress that this is NOT strategy development role but rather an ability to understand the strategies that are already there. I’ve often said in this blog that a project that is not aligned with a strategy should be disbanded. Too often many projects are created that have nothing to do with any company strategy.

Rubin makes a lot of sense. Listen and let me know if you agree.
