NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Mike Martz tried, but few survive the world of the Lions

Mike Martz (Elisa Getty Images)Hey, this is no scoop to faithful readers of Squibkick.

You know your intrepid author was already calling for Mike to be fired!

Now we have official notice.

Detroit will fire offensive coordinator Mike Martz after Sunday’s season-ending game at Green Bay and replace him with receivers coach Kippy Brown, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing anonymous sources.

The report was confirmed by ESPN analyst Chris Mortensen on Saturday night. source

Don’t worry about Martz, because he is the type of coach that owners are always interested in. Mike Martz runs an exciting offense. The rumor is that the 49er’s are already interested in Coach Martz.

Mike is not the bad guy. Injured runners, new receivers, no offensive line, no tight end, journeyman quarterback, etc. All these factors worked against him. How good was Mike? Well, you can only say that the offense improved greatly under his tutelage.

Kippy Brown

So who is Kippy Brown?

Following a stellar high school career, Brown attended Memphis State University(now known as University of Memphis) where he was quarterback for the Tigers from 1975-77. Brown was an outstanding field general, and his leadership ability combined with his unique scrambling talents and strong arm paid dividends when the Tigers upset sixth-ranked Auburn University 31-20 in 1975. source

Brown has coached at a number of places and is currently on the Lions staff.

Brown is in his second season as the Lions receivers’ coach. He was the Miami Dolphins coordinator in 1998-99.

He was reportedly the top candidate for the offensive coordinator job at the University of Tennessee

Yeah, all you Lions fans are already confused. Who do we want to fire now?

My vote is to Fire Matt Millen next!
