Comets hope Year Two brings changes

After a 13-21 finish with rushed first-year coach Karleen Thompson at the helm, a full off-season is expected to bring a full change to the Houston Comets. From the Houston Chronicle:

The team promoted Thompson, a former Comets assistant, to general manager and head coach on Feb. 14, 2007, and she went to work with a roster that had been assembled mostly by Chancellor. The Comets lost a franchise-record 10 consecutive games to start the season and missed out on the playoffs for only the second time in the team’s 11-year history.

But during the offseason, Thompson applied her stamp on the franchise through a series of personnel moves.

The Comets parted ways with three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player Sheryl Swoopes (signed by Seattle), guard Roneeka Hodges (expansion draft) and guard/forward Barbara Turner (traded to Connecticut). Thompson added veteran guards Mwadi Mabika and Shannon Johnson via free agency and re-signed guard Tamecka Dixon, forward Tina Thompson and center Michelle Snow.

The Comets will indeed compete in a stacked Western Conference this season, as evidenced by their 13-11 turnaround after the 10 straight losses to open the season.

I’ll give it a further look when I’m not chasing my tail covering college fires, but according to a late April post from the Houston Roundball Review, it might be tough to find the Comets on the radio this season.
