CONSOL Energy, which is known as one of the biggest underground coal producers in the United States, announced on Wednesday that they will cut their coal production. Originally, CONSOL Engery planned to produce 62 million tons of coal. Now, that number will be cut down to 60 million.
The company says that the cut was made necessary due to a lessening in the demand of their coal. That in itself isn’t very surprising. In this economy, the demand for everything has been sliding. On top of that, with seemingly everyone “going green”, cutting the country’s reliance on coal has been a major talking point over the last few years.
Coal mines that will be affected by this news are reportedly in the states of Kentucky and West Virginia. CONSOL Energy also has mines in other states including Pennsylvania, Utah and Ohio.
According to online reports, CONSOL Energy has more than 7,000 employees and revenue of more than $3.8 billion. The company, which was founded in 1864, is headquartered in Pennsylvania.
