Converting your old WPS files to DOC types

works-suite-2006.jpgIf you’re having problem in reading WPS files, this article/post can be your solution. But before that, to let you know (if you still don’t know), WPS files are you Microsoft Works Word Processor files. But unfortunately, Microsoft already discontinued probably the use of WPS files to make way of the DOC file uses.

Anyway, here are some tools that can help you convert and read/edit those WPS files. Microsoft offers a couple of tools to resolve this dilemma.

  • Word Viewer 2003 – View, print and copy Word documents, even if you don’t have Word installed. This download is a replacement for Word 97 Viewer and all previous Word Viewer versions.
  • Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter - Open, edit, and save documents in the Works Word Processor file format supported by Works versions 6, 7, 8 and 9. This download requires Windows Installer version 3.1 or higher. Please refer to System Requirements below for more details.

If you think that Linux users don’t have the tool for that, you can use the free online file conversion called Zamzar or YouConvertIt.

Well, I haven’t been able to make the MS 6 – 9 converter work yet.

  2. Lazy Dictionary says:

No this converter works perfectly. I was able to open my .wps file in Word perfectly. Just open Word first, then File-Open then arrow to All Files, then open up the file you want. Make sure it says All Files, otherwise it may open it badly, meaning that it is scrambled and unreadable at parts. Exactly what I was looking for.

Have tried to do what Lazy Dictionary has done but text is still unreadable. I have Vista and Microsoft Word 2003

  4. Paula says:

This file worked for me. Quick and easy.

  5. Kathy says:

I am completely computer illiterate. I just did a random search and found this site and was shocked that in less than 5 min. I could read some old files I had created in works before reformatting my computer. It worked great for me.

  6. Michael says:

This works perfectly. If you are having trouble opening some older files or and WPS files this converter will let you open all of them in Word. It is a great find.

I assume this program is some sort of joke! No executable file anywhere on the hard drive and no desktop or start menu shortcuts! Just a few DLL’s and Office 2007 still cannot open the file!!! This is appallling! Can MS not support proepr interoperability between their own products for heavens sake!

  8. Roland says:

I saved the 6-9 converter then attempted to open it in order to install it. When I double-clicked on the icon, I get the message: “The installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package”. Anybody got any suggestions?

  9. Roland says:

I tried it all over again. This time I chose run instead of save & was at least able to install the program. But, it doesn’t work. I had a few docs saved as .doc & they opened. No doc that was saved as .wps would open except in Notepad & it was a bunch of figures & emblems~not readable at all.

  10. Martin says:

I’ve followed the instructions to the letter and still the converter won’t work (running Vista and Office 2007) – just getting random characters. Suspect Vista, it’s caused me no end of problems this year. My current thoughts on Microsoft unprintable.

    Buy a MAC

    • paulus says:

Buy a mac to open files that are not supported on a Mac…hmmmm…..not great advice…

I am a Mac user and not being able to open .wps files (even with Office Mac 2008) is the reason I’m here…

Believe me..smug mac users think they have the best of all worlds, but not so…

  12. Kevin says:

I have downloaded transfered WPS files from my windows 98 computer onto my 2007 Windows Vista laptop and they won’t open. How do I open these? I’ve downloaded both of the viewer files and a converterpack. Nothing opens.
