Cool Vista Sidebar Gadgets

I love this intro into Alpha Geeks’ Vista gadget article:

Granted, a few Sidebar Gadgets offer little more than eye candy designed to wow consumers at Best Buy. But if you know where to look, you can stock your Sidebar with some genuinely useful tools. Let’s take a look at the cream of the crop.

That said there are some good ones out there.  From the list given I really like App Launcher and ClipboardHistory.  I don’t need or want a Gmail mailbox thingie.  I have a battery, WiFi, and CPU/Memory gadget.  Of course my ClearContext gadget is right on top.

I’m still looking for a gadget that shows day-night over a map of the world.  Yes, I know that they exist for Google and Yahoo, and I know that there are converter utils, but I’m pretty skeptical about doing the converting thing.

Regardless, good gadgets should be helpful and/or offer a nice distraction from the day.  You have a must-have gadget?

  1. If you’d care to give me a link to the Google/Yahoo gadgets you’ve seen, then I’ll be happy to attempt a conversion to a Vista Gadget!

    Cheers,

    Paul

How can I pass up an offer like that!

I’ll have to look for the links, but I know a world clock that I think is a Google one that also show the map of the timzone/area with day/night is very cool.

So … look for my links soon! W00t!

  3. Christian says:

I’d love one that says the current price of a barrel of oil.

  4. K says:

Price of a barrel of oil? Nah I dont think it’d update fast enough :)

  5. Ryan says:

To keep track of the oil price, just add the symbol “-CL” to the in-built ‘Stocks’ gadget.

  6. Kevin says:

Just tried to type “-CL” in the stocks gadget and it returned “service not available”.

  7. Ryan says:

It works for me. Make sure you don’t include the quotes around -CL

  8. Jason says:

“-CL” doesn’t work for me either (with out the quotes of course). Maybe my stocks gadget is hooked up to a different data source, or has a different setting that I am not aware of. Anyway, that is 2 of us that it doesn’t work for, yet for others it does… strange. What am I missing?
