Could You be a Professional Tweeter?

Here’s a reason to sign up for Twitter if you haven’t already done so: Some companies are now hiring experienced users to be professional Tweeters!

Twitter’s reach is much farther than you may realize. I begrudgingly keep my profile updated, and it’s definitely not my favorite thing to do. I totally see the benefits, though. In fact, let me tell you a funny story:

The place where I grew up is EXTREMELY rural. We’re talking it takes 45 minutes to drive to a mall or movie theatre and there are more cows than people. My house is actually the epitome of rural, even compared to some of the other homes in the area. I’m at the base of some mountains, so there’s almost no cell phone reception, and the cable lines don’t run there, so you’re stuck with dial-up Internet. We actually joking call it the “black hole of technology.”

My parents are content with a slower way of life, more about spending time outdoors in the woods than with any kind of gadget. They’re rarely logged online, except maybe to email me – though usually they just call. My mom types with two fingers. My dad types with one.

So, this past weekend, when I was visiting, my dad said something that cracked me up. I was standing in the kitchen with my cell phone, the only place where I get a single flickering bar of reception, trying to text a friend. My dad watched me for a few minutes, then goes, “Are you Tweeting?”

Yes, even my dad knows about Twitter. Actually, even my AUNT knows about Twitter, which is have more hilarious because she didn’t even have a microwave, let alone a cell phone or computer, until about 5 years ago. She asked my cousin the other day what Twitter was and why everyone uses it.

Everyone DOES use it, it seems. Even local news reports and radio DJs are promoting their Twitter profiles, and most major businesses update their accounts regularly.

And that can be a lot of work. Hence, professional Tweeters are being born. The gig is actually pretty sweet, since it really doesn’t take much time to update, but the companies who are hiring pay well because they know just awesome of a promotion tool this can be.

Is anyone out there a professional Tweeter? Do you feel like the job pays well for your time?

Hi, great article. Yes, I do social media for companies & have been doing it for over 5 years. It gets companies great Search Engine Optimization, protects their online identity/reputation and helps promote goods & services.

I just started a company called “CompanyMayor.com” which provides these services for companies who can’t afford a FT Tweeter/Facebooker. :)

You can find me on Twitter under my name or companymayor – my business twitter.

Very interesting. As an entrepreneur (German and Spanish translator and copywriter), I joined the Twitter revolution a few months ago. The real business impact for me still escapes me, but I am having a lot of fun expanding my virtual network and learing from folks around the world — linguists or not.

I would love to be a professional tweeter/facebooker but I don’t think there any businesses where I live who would be looking for one. In the company that I work for the guy who was most forward thinking on the whole social network side has left :(
