He’s a former hero (of sorts) of ours.
So here’s *blip* described in quick bullet points.
*Played three World Cups. Even captained his team in one. (Of course, we won’t name the years)
*Played another sport for his country. (What sport? Um, no. That would make it too easy)
*He’s often considered the renaissance man of his home country’s cricket.
Jonty Rhodes played another sport for his country as well, by the way. Of course, this is in no way related to this trivia. And it shouldn’t really help you.
So, dahlin’ readers, whose name did we, ahem, blip out?
Answer on Sunday.

Does ‘our’ hero imply that he was an Indian cricketer? I was actually thinking of Viv Richards because he did represent Antigua in football and of course he is a hero for most if not all ;) So he fits the bill except for one titbit in that he played in 4 rather than 3 World Cups. Never mind, at least I gave it a shot!
P.S. There have been a few cricketers (esp of the early 1900s) who have played other sports including Tip Foster and C.B Fry.
Bas,
Good try. Sorry, but you’re not anywhere close.
And he’s not Indian. (We’ve lots of heroes outside the subcontinent)
But, er, I should admit though…an “India” connection does exist (he’s NOT Indian, remember)…
Go figure.
Dinnie,
Interestingly Viv Richards has an ‘Indian connection’ too ;) Never mind, I’ll give the trivia another go in a bit, if I can think of something that is.
Viv had an Indian girlfriend as far as I can recall.
Nina Gupta, right?
The answer is Dave Houghton. The former captain of Zimbabwe also represented his country in Hockey. He played as a goal keeper of Zimbabwe’s hockey team. Dave Houghton was the first test match captain of Zimbabwe and led the side in 1992 world cup.
Thanks Dinnie for giving another trivia question.
Did Dave Houghton play three world cups?
Was he the renaissance man of Zimbabwe cricket?
Looks like I’ve got you guys really puzzled this time out.
Yes Dinnie, Dave Houghton played three world cup tournaments including 1983, 1987, 1992 world cup tournaments. He was the captain in 1992 world cup. He played in Zimbabwe’s national hockey team as a goal keeper.
Now, the question remains whether he was the renaissance man of Zimbabwe cricket.
Well, Zimbabwe played their first world cup in 1983 and their first world cup match was against Australia, which was also the debut match for Dave Houghton. Moreover, he captained Zimbabwe in their first four test matches. So, he could be the renaissance person of Zimbabwe cricket.
However, you may argue on the matter saying that Duncan Fletcher should be the renaissance man of Zimbabwe cricket. So, if Dave Houghton is not the right answer then I will try to find out the answer by Sunday.
rick charlsworth played and captained aussie hockey team
he is aa hall of famer
i believe he played cricket too.
There’s Friday and Saturday. So there’s time.
MP:
Did Rick play three world cups?
Is it Hansie Cronje?
its definetly Hansie…
meets all clues and has indian connection too… ;)
Excuse me, folk, what “other” sport did Hansie Cronje play?
Rugby
Asif Karim. Captained Kenya at Davis Cup tennis. That super spell of 3/7 nearly flooring Australia in the 2003 World Cup.
Dave Houghton is right too. He played hockey for Zimbabwe and captained in the 1992 tournament.
In my opinion, Houghton was far more the renaissance man for his team compared to Karim.
No more hints now. I’ve been too easy on you guys.
You’re still allowed to make guesses, though.
Asif Karim might be the right answer as he took part in three world cup tournaments: 1996, 1999 and 2003; captained Kenya in 1999 world cup. He also led his country in Davis cup tennis. Asif Karim can be considered as a renaissance man for Kenya’s cricket as his inspirational performance helped Kenya to reach the semi final of world cup 2003 and he is one of the best spinners ever played for Kenya.
Anyway, Dave Houghton could also be an answer for the question. Actually, I am looking forward to know the right answer now.
Yep, Karim. Answer is up.
Thanks for playing folks. Your great!
