I’m not that big of a fan of Cuttino Mobley, but my heart goes out to him. The NBA star was force to retire at age 33 from a heart condition. cuttinomobley_nc.jpg

Mobley was recently traded from the L.A. Clippers to the New York Knicks and during a routine physical, it was discovered that he had a serious heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. How a heart condition as serious as this had been overlooked before boggles my mind. Doctors told Mobley the he faced significant risks if he kept playing.

It was an easy decision for the 11-year veteran to retire, but not as easy to walk away from the game.

“The specialists I’ve seen made it clear that my heart condition has gotten worse and I couldn’t continue to play professional basketball without putting my health and life in serious danger,” Mobley said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “As much as I want to keep playing in the NBA, I have no choice but to follow the advice of my doctors and step away from the league.”

The heart condition that forced Mobley into early retirement was linked to the deaths of former Boston Celtics forward Reggie Lewis and Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers.
