Damon Huard – what might have been

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Kansas City had a pretty good quarterback in Trent Green and a very capable backup in Damon Huard. That was at the start of last season.

Then Green went down with a concussion.

The Chiefs were worried. They were in the playoff hunt, mostly because Larry Johnson was having another all world year at running back, in spite of some missing blockers.

Then along came Damon Huard

The journeyman proved to be an indispensable backup last season when starter Trent Green sustained a severe concussion in the season opener against Cincinnati. After spending most of his career as a second- or third-stringer, Huard was thrust into the starting lineup for eight games and led the Chiefs into the playoff hunt.

He went 5-3 as a starter, completing 148 of 244 passes for 1,878 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception. His 98.0 passer rating was second only to Peyton Manning. source

How was he doing it?

Herman Edwards did not care as long as the team stayed in the hunt.

Then Trent Green got better and Herman did a very strange thing. He benched the hot Damon Huard for the returning from the concussion Trent Green.

Normally when your starter returns from injury, nobody questions putting him back in.

This time, with Huard so hot, many people questioned pulling Huard.

Trent did not come through. It was painfully obvious that he did not have it.

The Colts took down the Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs. Now there is no shame in losing to the Colts, but once again, Trent Green played badly.

This leads to the inevitable conclusion, with the resigning of Damon Huard, Trent Green’s days as a Chief may be numbered. Huard is less expensive, younger, and quite possibly more viable.

NFL Football Fan Question Would you release Trent Green and start Damon Huard?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
