Dancesport as an Olympic Sport

I came across this post that talked about dancing as a sport and as an art, er, actually it’s more of a comparative argument raising points on whether it should fall under the former or the latter by two governing bodies in that arena. It caused me to wonder on the thought of dancing in the Olympics further.

It has been raised in earlier blog posts that Figure skating is or isn’t a sport but still is in the Olympics anyway. That goes the same for Gymnastics or even Bowls, so, what makes dancing any different?

Perhaps like how other people feel about figure skating, that’s how I see dancing now. It’s not the kind that I would think of as a sport. I can’t imagine it having world records that future athletes would strive to beat.

But then again when I think about the kind of training the dancers go through just to participate in a competition, I’d want to take whatever I just said back since most athletes train as hard as the next and would devote a lot of their time on perfecting a stance, a stroke or reaching a stamina that would help them earn that right to be an Olympian.

I don’t know. Why can’t Dancesport be an official Olympic sport?
