Dara Torres’ “Secret Weapon”

September 12, 2008 by Sandy Mitchell

Dara Torres defied her 41 years to not only make the US Olympic swimming team for a record fifth time, but to bring home three Silver Medals. Torres credits her success to a work-out technique called resistance stretching. In the video below, she talks a little bit about how this works and why it’s ideal for an older athlete.

She is such a marvel. I wish all the naysayers who insist she is doping would look at videos like this and realize that she has completely altered/revolutionized the way she trains. I’ve read that as a young swimmer she hated training and didn’t put as much effort into it as she could have, which is probably why the times she’s posting now are so much faster. She’s much more focused on flexibility rather than sheer muscle mass to get her through the water.

By the way, Dara won three silver medals, not two.
