Demise of Sunrocket leads to selling customer INFO!!

The end of SunRocket, the Virginia based VoIP company should serve as an example for the growing residential VoIP customers. As of Aug 5 SunRocket shut down their operations and service to an estimated 200,000 customers. Having being the second largest VoIP company in North America next to Vonage, SunRocket was overwhelmed by competition from major cable companies like Comcast and Time Warner which now service two-thirds of all residential VoIP customers.

Furthermore, SunRocket customers not only lost service; they also lost their privacy. Recent reports suggest that Sherwood Partners, the company handling the liquidation of SunRockets assets, has sold customer lists to Vonage. Many former SunRocket Customers have come on the record to say that shortly after SunRocket announced its collapse, they began receiving offers from Vonage at their private SunRocket e-mail accounts, which suggests that SunRocket did sell the lists.

A major lesson is to be learned from this; when subscribing to a third-party VoIP provider, be sure to consider the company’s long-term viability, especially if you are using a long-held phone number to its service. This requires a little research on the consumer’s part; even industry giants like Vonage may not be as stable as they seem; impacts to the company have been made by Verizon’s lawsuit against them.
