The Jacksonville Jaguars are giving their wide receiving corps a makeover. They’ve already released Matt Jones and Jerry Porter, while also making it clear that they have no intentions to re-sign free agent Reggie Williams. On Wednesday, news hit the wires that Dennis Northcutt has been place on the trade market.
The news was unveiled by ESPN.com in an exchange with Jerome Stanley, Northcutt’s agent. According to Stanley, the Jaguars intend to trade Northcutt and are trying right now to do so.
The future for the Jaguars at wide receiver appear to be veteran Torry Holt, who was signed in the offseason, and rookies Jarett Dillard, Tiquan Underwood and Mike Thomas. Jacksonville could also bring in another veteran to start next to Holt while the rookies learn the ropes.
Northcutt has had 44 catches in both of his seasons with the Jaguars. In 2007, he had 601 receiving yards. In 2008, he dropped to 545 receiving yards. If the Jaguars are able to trade the 31-year-old, the most they could likely hope for is a late round draft pick. If they can’t trade him, expect for the team to release him.
