Detroit Lions – Just when you think they got it, they don’t

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Detroit fan like what they see
As Lions fans go, you can count the Squibster as a total devotee. So, Sunday’s loss to Seattle was actually pretty good. How can a loss be good? The team attitude was positive. Well, the Lions did a lot of good things in the game. They looked very aggressive. As fans, we were excited! We are not used to the Lions doing a lot of good things in a game.

Roy WilliamsUnfortunately, well ahead of schedule to be a great team, Roy Williams guaransheeds a victor-Roy. We all remember Rasheed Wallace and his guarantees to victory. Even then we cringed, but at least the Pistons were a great team. The Lions are not. It is good Roy Williams is enthusiastic, but maybe he can work on his timing a little.

Upon further questioning, Roy backed off a little, but you can bet the quote is hanging in the Bears locker room. Not good to rattle the cage of last years division winner with the best defense in football when you are going to play on their field and you could not even produce 1 lousy touchdown in your game.

My stance, and let us hope this does not happen, is that the Lions are learning to be tough and aggressive and to still execute properly and that may take time. That meant a little house cleaning, a la Charles Rogers, Artose Pinner, Joey Harrington, etc. That also means, and this is where Lions fans want me to be wrong, that the Lions are going to lose for a while. Look we saw the Chicago Bears go through this and come out a much better team.

Coaches have the right stuff
We can tell that Donnie Henderson with the defense and Mike Martz with the offense will do just fine in the long run. We can tell the Rod Marinelli is exceeding all of our expectations, not something expected as he is a Matt Millen hire. In fact, check this article out on Rod Marinelli. It is just more positive than a Lions fan can handle. What we can’t tell is how long it will take for the Lions to gain the confidence that the can get it done. My guess is that it may take a while. In the Lions favor is a fairly weak schedule.

Of course it is never all roses in Lions land, but you would think that by now your intrepid author has worked off at least 250 years of bad Karma, wouldn’t ya?
