NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Everyone knows that the Detroit Lions are lacking in talent, but new Coach Jim Schwartz says the talent in the NFL is really close from team to team.

So how do you explain what it takes to win in the NFL?

Schwartz showed the players a picture he used to have in the defensive meeting room at Tennessee, where he was the defensive coordinator the past eight seasons.

The picture is of the 100-meter final at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“I put that photo up,” Schwartz said Wednesday at the NFL owners’ meetings. “I said, ‘Who’s the fastest guy in the world? Who won the gold medal?’ ”

It was the United States’ Justin Gatlin. But that wasn’t the point.

“My point is, he wasn’t the fastest guy in the world,” Schwartz said. “All those guys were the fastest guy in the world. It was just that race, he won that particular race.

So according to Schwartz we want the slowest guy?

No, no, no. Coach Schwartz goes on to explain.

“It had nothing to do with talent,” Schwartz said. “It was all about technique. It was all about preparation and that perfect performance. There is a little bit of that in the NFL.”

Schwartz isn’t saying that talent isn’t important. On the contrary, he has said several times and in many different ways that the Lions need more talent. A lot more of it.

What he’s trying to show is that, in the NFL, there isn’t as much difference as it appears between 0-16 and 16-0.
