Dickens Manuscript ‘Great Expectations’ To Be Sold At Auction

Sale Price Forecast to be Lower Than Previously Expected

The manuscript of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations and the writing desk where he penned the classic tale are expected to fetch less than the original optimistic estimates forecast for their auction.

Auctioneers are calling it a “helluva twist” in the efforts to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Hospital officials acknowledged that while the auction was expected to bring in record proceeds for the sale of Dickens memorabilia, the total figure would still be less than they originally hoped for.

In many ways, it appears to be the best of times and yet the worst of times for the Dickens related charity.

Hospital officials were overheard to say to the auctioneer, “Please, sir. We want more.”

Proceeds from the auction will go to help fund the hospital. The auction itself will be turned into a Merchant Ivory period film starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins.

Perhaps the price is down because expectations are down.

So much for the spring of hope, right?
