Diet- A Four Letter Word

November 26, 2008 by Kelly Turner

I hate the word diet.

I hate it almost as much as I hate when people say, “I could care less.” It’s “I couldn’t care less”- if you could care less then it means you care.

A diet is what you eat; not how you eat.

If i ate nothing but rocks, tennis ball fuzz, and tin foil, that would  be my diet.

When did it morph into something you go on? For a really short amount of time? Like vacation except you hate every second of it?

I agree – our culture is so messed up with this whole “diet craze.” People need to just eat to live, NOT live to eat (or starve or whatever).

  2. Couldn’t agree more, Kelly. The word diet is so misused that I avoid it at all costs. Instead, I say that I have a “healthy lifestyle,” which includes what I eat.

    I know. It’s awful.

(I’ll prevent myself from going on a rant-age).

I think it has to do with just making a decision to control it… i have never “gone on a diet” and when you stop and think about it yeah it’s like… huh? but i guess trying to streamline choices and also make the choices that will help you lose weight. i love the HILARITY that is the diet industry in america because we spend so much money on books and gimmicks and we are getting more and more overweight. maybe we should stop “going on a diet” and re-evaluate diet as just what we eat and then just EAT a little bit more reasonably. hmm.

Yeah, it pretty much sucks (given what it NOW implies). I use meal plan to try and stay away from it. But it’s not really a huge deal.. I mean, I could care less… ;-) hahahah, j/k!!

    All the Best,

I agree 100%. I used to be one of those people who was constantly “on a diet”, but now any time I refer to “my diet” I just mean the way I eat/my eating habits. The one thing I’m dreading about going home again is having everyone ask me what kind of “diet” I’m on and telling me all about their newest “diet”. I think I’ve decided that when someone asks me, “What kind of diet are you on?” I’m going to respond with, “the one where I eat healthy, whole foods the majority of the time but allow myself treats here and there so I never deprive myself of what I want.”

You know the first time I “went on” a diet I was 8. seriously. I wrote that in my diary, I even wrote what I was going to eat. I uh, didn’t follow it, which has pretty much been my M.O. since, but …that story breaks my heart, to think of my little 2nd grade self already thinking that I needed to lose weight to be “better.”

“Rocks, tennis ball fuzz and tin foil!” Hahaha. That would make an awesome ‘diet book’ – you’d be rich, Kelly! :)

  9. Lance says:

Used in the right context, I like the word diet. As in what I eat – my diet consist of ….

I hate it, though, as it is usually used – I went on a diet. I think it should be called something like “nutritional plan” in this context…

  10. Cammy says:

Having a bad day, are we? :)

Seriously, I’m with you. It irritates me, to some degree, when people don’t seem to get that I’m not ON a diet, but that I HAVE a diet. I’ve HAD a diet since birth. Until recently it was a poor diet, but it was a diet.

    Sheesh…

    Have an awesome Thanksgiving!
