While Walt Disney Co is certainly best known for its cartoons, movies, and theme parks geared toward children, the entertainment giant has purchased a variety of websites from Kaboose Inc for a total of $18 million. This move marks one of several efforts on the part of Disney to make an impact on the Internet.
Although the acquisition was announced back in April, it finally went through today. Disney will now own popular sites like Babyzone.com and Kaboose.com in addition to its other popular parent websites, such as Disneyfamily.com. According to Disney, almost 20 percent of moms online will be reached by Disney through the Internet.
Disney’s parent and family-oriented websites will be collected as part of a division called Disney Online Mom and Family Portfolio, which will be managed by Disney Online vice president Emily Smith. Although Disney plans to separately manage Kaboose.com and the other acquired websites, it has not yet ruled out any level of consolidation.
