Do Reports of “Real Use” Contribute to Technology Acceptance Lags?

BI 1Interesting report on use of “business intelligence” or BI in Manufacturing Business Technology. Not at all surprising is the statement that software/service vendors hype is not matched by real world use:

“The manner in which companies are using business intelligence (BI) technology does not exactly match the picture painted by vendors and other industry experts.”

Apart from the obvious sales and marketing approach that makes vendors play up the benefits and use of BI, there is always a lag in use of relatively new technology- the “early adopter” is usually followed by those who want to see what happens.

I think that the question should be analyzed by breaking down respondents into categories by buying style in order to get a more accurate assessment of “real world use”. These types of articles tend to falsely depict the process (and therefore progress) of market acceptance thus contributing to the “lag” between “early adopters” and others.

Do you feel that such articles/assessments/reports contribute to lags in acceptance of new technology? Why is it important, or not, to understand the process of market acceptance when considering new technology? Will such an understanding enable your company to be more competitive?
