Do Women Make Good School Principals?

Since we both have school age children and volunteer at the schools often, my frriend and I debate over this quite frequently:

Do women make good school principals?

My friend says no. I say it doesn’t really make a difference. You see, we’re both from the time when there were always male principals. That was all we knew and we were cool with it. But, starting in the late 80’s and into the 90’s, women principals started showing up more and more in our schools. I think it started making some folks uneasy.

My friend contends that when the “men” were in charge, more got done and the kids weren’t the way they are these days. They insists that if the role of a principal was given back to the guys, things would be better. I disagree. I think that the best, most effective person for the job should prevail. What do you think?

Do you think women or men make better school principals?

Which did you have when you were in school? Do share.

Oh, and by the way. My friend is a woman. Go figure.

I had both in high school. While I think that women are just as capable at getting stuff done (and women may even be BETTER at the task), I have to say that a man as a principle is, in general, better as discipline. A female principle can’t break up fights between two 18-year-olds. Men are respected more in that role, so for that reason alone, I’d usually rather see a man as principle.

Best case scenario, however, would probably be co-principles, one of each sex.
