Do You Have Good Leadership Traits?

What does it take to have good leadership traits? Is it learned or is it something you are born with? Having good leadership traits is essential to being able to lead a team, manage a business or run an organization.

Some of the things that exemplify good leadership traits can be remembered from the use of the acronym E.A.S.E.:

  • Encourager and charismatic inspirer: keeps those on their team inspired and able to motivate them to succeed.
  • Awareness of environment and integrity: able to understand their surroundings and can affectively use integrity to effect what type of work environment exist for their team in a positive way.
  • Security: able to help the team feel secure in the fact that they can be successful and accomplish their goals
  • Empathy: understand that being a good listener to the teams’ input helps the team function as one and keeps “clicks” out of their environment

Having good leadership traits is something that needs continuous honing and refinement. Not honing or refining your leadership traits can cause you to become stagnate. Being perfect is not as important as being able to say that you made a mistake. Those with good leadership traits understand that being perfect is impossible and that being able to lead a team to success is more important.

Let’s look at the leadership traits of President Obama when he was running for President and how he affectively changed the way politicians run for office.

  • During his candidacy period, he encouraged and inspired many to support his campaign by being open with his supporters in a way that many have never seen.
  • Because he was aware of the political environment, he made changes in the way a political campaign was run. He openly welcomed his supporters to be innovative in how they campaigned for him especially through the use of social media.
  • His supporters felt secure in the fact that he could really make a change in the political arena.
  • He was also known as a politician who had empathy for his supporter and that he was a good listener.

As you cultivate your leadership traits, I want to encourage you to keep all of these things in mind. I want to hear your feedback. Please feel free to share.

  1. I would say that some are more predisposed to being a great leader than others. With that being said, I think that effective leadership can be learned. Definitely agree that you must continuously hone your leadership skills.
