Do You Know Who Your Target Market Is?

Do you know who your target market is? If your answer is: men, or women, or everyone under 40, or worse yet, you just don’t know… you have some work to do. The more you can learn about the demographic of the market who is looking for the exact product or service your small business is offering, the more success you will have marketing to them.

Ask yourself, “Who needs my product or service?” Picture them in your head. When you get a good visual, write it down. Write down the details of the person you are marketing to. If the person you’re marketing to is similar to yourself it’s easy, write down what you’re looking for in the type of product(s) you’re marketing.

If you’re target market is nothing like you, come up with a make believe person who is exactly like someone you would like to sell to. Write down their details.

If for example your business is delivering home cooked meals to busy families, you could say your target market is working moms from 20 to 40, the ultimate soccer mom with children going in ten directions after school. Can you picture this mom, and her busy evenings rushing around, trying to find time to make a healthy dinner?

That picture will help you way more than saying your target market is moms under 40.

If you have more than one target market, focus! Create a campaign for one target market at a time, don’t try to create one campaign for to target several markets, it won’t work as well as a campaign to market to one well defined group of potential customers.

Having a clearly defined target market helps you create ads for your small business, and marketing campaigns that will be more effective at targeting people who are likely to purchase your product.
