Do You See What I See?

“Do you see what I see?” Do you see what I see? Go ahead and sing. I know you want to… Visionary is a core competency for leaders. Though we could sing the Christmas song, I thought given the season, it was appropriate to talk about vision. According to Stan Toler, Leaders are visionary.

“Leaders not only have an eye on the horizon, they can see beyond it. Their firm grasp of the present is based on their never-ending hope for the future… Leaders look at vacant land and see a thriving business.

According to the Denver Business Journal, Good leaders create a vision, a picture of the future, of where they want to take their organizations. Leaders can improve both the quality and acceptance of the vision by partnering with their peers, executive team, key employees throughout the organization or outside consultants. To get the best vision you need lots of ideas, and people support what they help to create.

“Behind every success story is a vision. Vision is not a fantasy of the impractical or the improbable like the lottery. Rather vision is a vivid image in the mind’s eye of transforming the impossible into the possible.”  

Are you a visionary? Can you communicate vision in an interview? 

Given my series of posts on core competencies, you will need to know how to thread this core competency in your hiring discussion. If you have the ability to see beyond where your organization is today and you can move the organization to the place you see in your minds eye – into the future, then you are probably a visionary. The challenge is communicating that in an interview. How do you communicate this core competency to a hiring manager who is looking for a leader? For a visionary who not only sees beyond today, but has successfully taken organizations, teams successfully into new places.
