Does Your Logo Stand Out from the Crowd?

As I’ve said before, your logo is a symbol of your brand’s image and promise. It’s also a tool for communicating that message visually. Therefore, it’s important that your logo stands out from the torrent of visual messages consumers see each day.
With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to conduct an experiment. Below is a graphic that includes a number of well-known logos. Take a look at it then answer the questions that follow.

- Which of the logos jumped out at you and caught your attention first?
- What is it about those logos that made them jump out at you?
- Which logos are the most visually appealing?
- Which of the logos are easiest to read and identify?
- Which logos don’t seem to get the job done and get lost in the shuffle?
Leave a comment with your responses, and I’ll post a wrap up later in the month. In the meantime, ask yourself if your logo stands out from the crowd, and if you’re planning on creating a logo in the future, make sure it does.

To me, these stand out at first glance:
Mercedes
Volkswagen
Kool-AId
Bic
Land Rover
None of them stand out a ton. Which ones stand out to you?
Thanks for responding, Doug. I didn’t want to sway any responses by giving mine first (sort of the opposite idea of my Brand Free Association posts). I’ll give my responses in the wrap up later this month. Stay tuned…
Okay here’s my second try.. hope it takes.
I agree with Doug that none of them came slamming out at me – - that may be because there are so many. But at first glance the one’s I saw most included:
Hot Wheels
Dennys
Oral-B
Kool-Aid
MacDonalds (ICK)
Can you tell I have a son :) I’m pretty sure that’s why all the kid type stuff popped out first. I look at these things all the time.
Jennifer,
Thanks for answering. Your comment actually brings up an interesting point as to whether the logos we’re most familiar with or are most present in our minds are the ones we subconsciously see first. That’s an interesting consumer behavior and psychological study.
Note to Brandcurve readers – sounds like a good thesis topic for anyone working on an MBA or doctorate in marketing or a related field!
Fun post here Susan. The logos I noticed first included Best Buy, Mercedes, Kool Aid and Mobil/Mitsubishi (they kinda looked like a single one till I paid closer attention).
IMHO, what makes some stand out are images attached to them, or else an unusual font, such as Kool-Aid’s. Mobil’s two tone font made it unusual, and it also looked like it had an image attached. Best-Buy is in a price tag image. Mercedes … is the silver star.
Thanks for playing. I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s responses. I’ll post a recap next week!
