Donovan McNabb regains form as Marinelli spews quotes

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Brian Westbrook (CLEM MURRAY / Inquirer )It was a beautiful fall afternoon.

The kind of day where you just want to be outside and any old excuse will do.

Now your intrepid author had predicted a Lions victory and a Charger victory, so beautiful day or not, the big screen was beckoning me home. There were roadblocks, such as my participation in doggy obedience class with the dog and wife and a little laptop shopping to get done.

Still the DVR awaited so all was cool. With the DVR, time really does stand still.

My most excellent friend Ron was within cell phone reach when the wife left me in the car with the dog to go shopping at the book store. The Lions update was not good. Donovan McNabb was on a roll.

By the time the car reached home the game was still in doubt. The score was Philly 42 Lions 21. Hey, what is a 21 point deficit to a Lions fan?

The Lions ended up losing by 35. A close defeat for a Lions fan. You knew that if just 50 plays had went the other way then the Lions could have prevailed.

“They rushed, and we didn’t,” Marinelli said.

To make matters worse, the Packers won later on over the Chargers.

Squibster picks two games and records two losses. Season record: 1 – 2.

NFL Roy Williams alert Roy caught 9 balls for 204 yards. That is right, 204 yards.

So going into this game the Lions were on a roll and the Eagles were slipping. That all changed in the first half and kept on changing in the second half.

The Eagles looked like the old Eagles, who are used to winning, in ending a two-game losing streak with their first victory of the season. Their offense raced up and down the field at will, and their defense hammered Lions quarterback Jon Kitna all game.

And the Lions (2-1) were the old Lions, a comparison they have come to dread. They couldn’t tackle, and their offense — despite 446 passing yards by Kitna — was inconsistent, error-prone and woefully unable to run the ball. source

Yes, the first road game for the young Lions did not go well.

“They rushed, and we didn’t,” Marinelli said.

Let’s see, no rushing and your quarterback either winging the ball all over the place for 446 yards or lying flat on his back.

In the area where games are decided most often — up front in the trenches — it was no contest. The Eagles rushed for 173 yards while the Lions managed only 39. And in the first half, when the Eagles built a 42-21 lead, the Lions had a net of zero yards on four running plays.

In addition to the nine sacks, the Eagles had Kitna on the run all game. The Lions had three sacks.

Coach Marinelli expounded on this point as only he can.

“They rushed, and we didn’t,” Marinelli said.

Donovan was clearly in charge and while it may not shut up his critics, no matter what color they are, it was still a reminder that McNabb can be an awesome quarterback.

McNabb completed 21 of 26 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns. His one-game passer rating of 158.3 was highest possible under the NFL system.

The highest possible! Wow!

Donovan should thank the Lions.

“They rushed, and we didn’t,” Marinelli said.

NFL Football Fan Question Never doubt the home team in the NFL. Did you pick the Lions or Chargers?

James, I picked the Eagles all week over on detroitlions dot contentquake dot com also I am concerned about Roy Williams dropping 3 catchable passes and looked like he hurt his wrist late. Also on the long run after catch he was running with the ball exposed just like last week when he fumbled late in the game and almost cost the lions a win.
