Down with Illegal File Sharers, Says Game Publishers

computer handcuffsGame publishers in the UK are declaring an all-out war against illegal file sharers, according to this article. Well they should.  Imagine that there are about 25,000 Brits allegedly sharing and downloading games illegally.  And there’s even one that was fined £16,000 for illegally downloading Dream Pinball 3D from a file sharing website just this week.

The thousands of suspects were asked to pay a fine of £300 to avoid being persecuted.  And that’s 10x more the price of a game they should have been purchasing.  Although there have been steps to discourage illegal sharing and downloading, it will be hard to eliminate them all.

Here in Asia, another type of game distribution has been very sucessful in warding off illegal sharing.  Its downloading games for free and just shelling out to kit out or soup up their characters.  Its actually an approach to appeal for the casual gaming market.

I wonder, though, if this will actually solve the piracy problem?
