The fix is described as follows (from Ms description):
Install this update to resolve an issue where an Apple iPod may be corrupted by using the Safely Remove Hardware feature on a system running Windows Vista. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
This update is provided to you and licensed under the Windows Vista License Terms.
Microsoft says that iTunes is a great product and is important that Windows Vista users would have no problems with it.
It’s worth adding that if your iPod refuses to go into Disk Mode and you hear a noticeable clicking sound the problem might just be corrosion on the HDD cable and will need cleaned periodically.
