Do you all remember that adventure like game, Dragon’s Lair? You know… the one where you’re a knight named Dirk the Daring, who has to save Princess Daphne from an evil dragon. The one that had super awesome graphics that were never seen in 1983 when the game was first released in an arcade format. The one that was AMAZINGLY DIFFICULT TO DO ANYTHING IN BECAUSE YOU CONSTANTLY DIED?!

That is a lot of effin’ ways to die. It’s no wonder I hated this game as a child.

Oh, yes… you know the one I’m talking about. Well, if you, unlike me, actually like the game, there is good news for you! It’s being ported to both the Nintendo DS and the Sonly Playstation 3 by a company called Digital Leisure. Why? So that Dragon’s Lair may frustrate a new generation of gamers.

HEre’s what Digital Leisure’s site says about the PS3 version of the game:

Dragon’s Lair is now fully compatible with the All New PlayStation 3 in full 1080p High Definition video as well as your standalone Blu-ray Player

Use your PS3 or Blu-ray Player to unleash this smash hit arcade game!
Not only can you now play in High Definition and listen in fantastic 5.1 Surround Sound but you get Full HD 1080p bonus materials!!

This release has been designed in the all new BD-J authoring environment allowing for a complete Arcade Authentic Experience

Lead on brave adventurer….. Your Quest Awaits!

I also found some more information on the wonderful Kotaku website about the Nintendo DS port of the game. According to Kotaku, the game will take advantage of the DS dual screen, will have voice activation (probably to give you more chances to die), touch pad support and many other things to numerous too steal from Kotaku’s site… so, if you’re curious as to what all will be featured on the DS, check it out here.

Oh, and I found this piece of trivia over on the Dragon’s Lair Wikipedia. Apparently the main character, Dirk the Daring, only speaks twice throughout the entire game (except for all the screaming he does when dying). Once to say “Uh Oh” when the game starts and once to say “Wow” when he first spots Princess Daphne. I would imagine it’s for the better, because doesn’t Dirk the Daring (pictured above) look like one of those jock types that probably sounds like a caveman when he speaks? Oh yes, he does.

I loved this game when I was kid, but I rarely made it past the first scenario or two.

However, I once watched this guy go from start to finish on a single quarter. Once he’d finished, he noticed that I’d watched him play, the “awe” apparent on my face. So he gave me a quarter and coached me through the game.

It’d be interesting to see how this works out for the Nintendo DS.

As for picking it up for PS3 on Blu-Ray, I’d want a little more than just developer commentary, etc.

Maybe they could throw in Space Ace as well…? That’d be pretty cool…oh, and a $20 price tag wouldn’t hurt either…

The Blu-Ray is unplayable?! What’s the point then? I’ll stick with the DS version.

I’d give $100 to see someone get from the beginning to the end on one quarter. That dude must have spent a lot of quarters in his time.

The Blu-Ray is playable, isn’t it? It just includes some extras as well (no wonder, given the storage capacity of the blu-ray disks).

And the guy that I watched must have spent a fortune. I’m pretty sure he could’ve played the game through with his eyes closed…
