Drilling today for a solar tomorrow?

Got this email from Steve Harris of KnowledgePublications.com:

Dear Hilary,

Please send this to your IA Represenative and tell them what you think.

This is an excellent 3 minute video on what can be done with energy NOW.

Use this link to find your United States congress idiot.
https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml

Tell them you WANT ALL bans on exploration LIFTED NOW.  On oil, gas and methane hydrates.

You want Nuclear Energy as good as the French, Japan and the US Navy have done

Tell them you want EVERY form of energy that is made DIRECTLY from solar energy to be TAX FREE.
Tell them you want EVERY form of energy that contains at least 25% diatomic Hydrogen to be TAX FREE.
(note: you suckers in the EU that pay $10 for petro with $7 of that in taxes should do the same thing, hell we threw the britts out over a tax on tea 200 years ago, and you pay $7 tax on fuel?)

Do today what you can do to make things better today. Then do today what you can to make things better tomorrow.

We need ALL of the oil we can get…and there is PLENTY.  Why? Because we WILL be on a Solar Hydrogen economy an then Oil, Coal and Natural gas will be used as a source of carbon to make carbon fibers that make buildings, bridges, wire, insulation, shirts, instruments, car bodies…

Our children will live in a world made of carbon the same way we live in a world made from concrete and steel.

There is NO such thing as ‘PEAK Oil’, but ‘PEAK Stupidity’ is rampent !!

Normally I think Steven is a spot on kind of guy, but I couldn’t disagree more with his ideas for drilling oil in protected areas. Once we drill for oil, what’s next?

Maybe it’s because I grew up near the largest gypsum deposits in the world and I remember stories of parking lots caving in, and watched as woods we’d played Capture the Flag in (Yes, they had it before Video Games lol) sunk away into the dirt. I know first hand that sucking the life out of the land is not the best course of action.

Reduce dependence. Reduce Price. That has got to be our objective, not Get as Much as we Can While Our Generations are Alive. Pffft. I do not believe that given all the oil we can handle that we won’t just use it up.

But maybe I’m being too negative … what do the rest of you think about it?

I’m with you. Necessity is the mother of invention. Everybody acts like it will take years to switch to alternative energy automobiles so we need to keep drilling to stay alive. Just you watch how fast the invisible hand of the free market will come up with alternative cars, etc when consumers are screaming for them like they are now. A big GMC dealership near my home is a ghost town – no customers. They are actually selling scooters in front of it. Lol.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I have been up near the artic national wildlife refuge (anwr). Some news stations are trying to paint it as a desolate and miserable place. I thought it was breathtakingly beautiful and have always been opposed to marring the landscape there. IMHO it would be a crime against our children’s children to just toss up our hands and give in on it.

Why are these oil people so bothered with drilling in protected areas when they already have a lot of land that’s leased to them and it just sits there unexplored? More oil isn’t the answer and won’t solve anything, but it will pollute more of the US and kill wildlife.

Also, it would take so long (up to 10 years) to get oil from these new areas that I’d hope we’ll all be on to new technologies by then — not cars that run on petro.

And I can’t believe McCain now supports this stupidity. No way I can vote for him now.

Sure we are in a mess now, and starting the exploration now will not solve the problem. What about 10 years from now. The problem is only going to get worse with an expanding global economy. We can’t pretend the US in the only major consumer anymore. If you think the current economy is bad, you haven’t seen anything yet.

As to new technology. I’m beating that drum myself. Food eth is not the answer and from the looks of things neither is c eth. Rechargeable batteries need some more revision before I trust them.

Seems to be a good step.

As to the already leased land, just because its leased, dose not mean there is oil on it, or enough to extract to make it worth while. As a 401k hold, who more than likely has part of the investment in “big oil” I expect a return for future retirement funds along with the other 48% share holders.

Cars not running on petro, Hydrogen is still to expensive to produce, let alone for the masses for safely handle, and electric while nice dose not take me out of my semi-urban environment from time to time for astronomy meets and conventions. Not to mention most current hybrids I can’t fit in or would be a even swap with what I already have.

I do what “safe” hypermilling I can. I have already cut my consumption by 72 gallons a year by a change of driving habits and lifestyle choices, and a further estimated 120 more gallons by switching cars at base. Taking me off the oil supply line by a factor of 2 months, and hopefully I’ll be able to trim more.

When (not if) we have a major tech break through that dose not break the bank of the avg. US consumer, and is safe on all fronts. It will take a while to manufacture what is needed to make demand, let alone make a difference in Oil demand. Let us not forget heating oil and natural gas. I’m not willing to freeze to make an enviromental statement.
