Eating While Networking

Most networking events have some kind of snack available. Depending on the event, you may be offered a whole spread or buffet to choose from.

Now, I have to ask, are you there to make contacts, or to get a free meal?

Because food is tricky stuff – I’m serious – dips can fall and stain your shirt, chips can leave crumbs all over the place, and even those little appetizers can squirt filling or grease right down your chin. Gross picture, right? Now, what happens if you’re squirting or dripping or crumbing while you’re talking to what could be your next employer or a prospective client?

Would you want to work with someone if the first thing you think of every time you see them is squirting, dripping, or some other food faux pas? Doubtful, right? When things like this happen, we tend to rationalize it as no big deal, saying things like it happens to everyone. This is a placebo that may make you feel better but you still won’t get the phone call.

Keep eating where it belongs, at home or in a restaurant. If you’re that nervous, go for a piece of sliced cheese. You don’t need to carry around a plate and if you have to swallow a bit of it whole because someone walks up and talks to you, you won’t choke on it. Most likely.
