ECW Recap (March 4, 2008)

- ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero def. CM Punk
Well ECW continues to drag on. The Chavo-Punk feud is not going over at all with me. I think there could be a little potential here but some new blood really needs to be injected into this brand or at least into this feud. All we’ve seen for a while now is back and forth between Chavo and Punk but everytime the title is on the line Punk loses rather cleanly. It’s not Chavo holding on to the title or Punk not holding it that I mind, it’s the fact that every match feels the same as the one before it.
Right now it seems like they’re building this feud up for Wrestlemania but there has to be a major stipulation attached (perhaps extreme rules?) for me to even tune in. This title feels so worthless in the overall scheme of things and they need to really boost it back up to prominence if they want it to last. Thinking back to the revival of ECW the title meant a lot more when RVD, Show, and Lashley held it plus they actually did a decent crossover with Mr. McMahon holding it for a while. Not anymore though, but I think it’s still salvageable and I hope they at least start on the right track with a solid match at Wrestlemania perhaps with some sort of twist thrown in the spice things up.
Next week we’re going to see a rematch of the tag title match but it will be extreme rules. The brand has really gone downhill in my eyes from the point where they removed the once-a-week extreme rules matches and I hope they eventually move back to the idea.
I’m not sure the title will change hands next week on ECW but it would seem likely they change hands at Wrestlemania if Morrison and Miz still have the titles then.
