I’ve been talking recently about how education is important, even if you are a college football star. So, to promote that idea and participate in Bloggy Giveaways (check it out for TONS of prizes), I’m giving away a book to a lucky child.
Here’s the deal. It ticks me off when kids say that they don’t like to read. I don’t believe that’s true. If you don’t like to read, you just have never read a good book. With this giveaway, the winner will their choice of the following books, to give away to a child (theirs or someone else’s). If you child LOVES
reading, consider passing this book on to a child who hasn’t yet found that love.
These were some of my personal favorites as a child. I’ve included books for all age groups, so please pick the one appropriate for your child. I’ve also done my best to include books that both girls and boys can enjoy.
To win – leave a comment telling me which book you want and who you’re going to give it to. The winner will be drawn randomly from all of the entries. Comments will close at 10 PM on August 1, 2008. I’ll ship to the US only. If you live outside of the US and win, I’ll reimburse through paypal or an Amazon gift certificate the price of the book + up to $5.00 in shipping IF you send me proof that you’ve purchased it.
Click on any of the titles to read more – and at the end, I’ll tell you additional ways in which you can win!
For Babies and Toddlers:
For Ages 4 – 10:
- The Paper Bag Princess
- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
- Amelia Bedelia and the Baby
- The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body (Magic School Bus)
For Tweens/Young Teens:
- Number the Stars
- Sideways Stories from Wayside School
- Maniac Magee
- A Wrinkle in Time
- Mr. Popper’s Penguins
- Sooner or Later (this is one of my favorites, but the topic is somewhat mature…read up on it before giving it to your child)
- Redwall (Redwall, Book 1)
Teens:
While it isn’t a prerequisite to win the prize, if you send me proof that you purchased any of the books on this list, I’ll give you one additional entry per book. (Email your proof of purchase – all personal info blotted out – to allison.boyer-at-yahoo.com with “Bought a Book” as your subject.) Think about it. For under $10, you can really encourage you nephew or that neighbor kid of yours, or whoever to put down the video games for a second and read a book. It’s an investment well worth the money.

I’d choose Animal Farm for my almost-14y/o daughter. She loves to read, but it’s pretty much all fantasy fic. I’d love to see her broaden her literary horizons, and I think this one’s compelling enough to do that. Thanks!
I’d love to get the Paper Bag Princess for my friend’s daughter. My own daughter loves to read and has hundreds of books, but her friend isn’t too keen on reading. She had to go for special help this past school year and I keep trying to get her to read when she comes over to play, loan her books. I think that if she found something she loved she might take a shine to it more.
I’d pick either Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book (for one of my nephews or nieces) or Amelia Bedelia and the Baby for my niece. I loved Amelia Bedelia as a child (still do, truth be told, lol).
i’d love to get Sooner or Later for one of my students. I know she could really relate to it and it would do her a world of good. I teach high school reading to struggling readers and this is a great one! good choosing!
The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body was a favorite from the library. I’d like to own a copy for my inquisitive son!
Thanks!

I’d love the Book of Lost things. It sounds wonderful. I would love to read it and then pass it on to my cousin.
I’d like Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day for my daughter. I’ve heard good things about it.
I would love a copy of The Patron Saint of Butterflies by Cecilia Galante! (And isn’t the cover gorgeous?) I totally agree with you! There are so many kids I know that hate reading! At my high school once we had reading logs, and you had to write about 3 books in 10 weeks. It really shocked me when some people were saying that they still hadn’t read a single book by the 10th week! So, thanks so much for this giveaway!

I wold lvoe to have the What Baby says book.
I would choose The Paper Bag Princess for my 5 year old daughter!
Redwall! My boys listened to the audio version, but both said they’d love to read it.
I would choose A Wrinkle in Time, and I would give it to one of the young people who comes to my library just to use the computers. I’ll hook them into books if it’s the last thing I do!
