Eight-legged robotic freaks are nothing new, and while we’ve already seen one used for (awkward) transportation, the Halluc2 is reportedly gearing up to take on rescue missions or be modified for use in wheelchairs or even passenger vehicles. The creature, which was assembled by the Chiba Institute of Technology, was designed to crawl like an insect over complex terrain, but with a little go-go-gadget-leg action, it can bust out the wheels for a smoother, car-like mode of operation. Supposedly, the university is hoping to use the locomotion technology to develop robots for far more important tasks, but we could definitely envision some serious problems introducing the Halluc2 to arachnophobic individuals.
