Election Day: What’s Important to You?

Today is Election Day, and I encourage you to get out and vote. It is important to think about who you are voting for, both in the national offices and in the local offices. Actually, who you put into your local offices may affect you more overall than who wins the presidency.
But this election is one of the most important we’ve had (and the most important in my lifetime), since it really could affect us on a personal level. Indeed, worries about how policies of John McCain or Barack Obama could affect the economy and our personal finances is why the economy is the #1 issue for most people in this election. A great many people are voting with their wallets. If you plan to vote with your wallet, you need to decide whose policies are likely to benefit you most
My most important issue in this election is health care. Of course, health care is a very big wallet-type issue. We have serious problems that need to be fixed with health care. But education, the economy and energy are all important to me as well.
What’s the most important issue for you in this election?

Hey Miranda,
For me personally, education is #1 and that is mainly because I have small kids in the school system and I see so many flaws.
In my state, one of the ballot questions is to eliminate the income tax. What a tough question…initially you think, wow, great, extra money in my check every month! But, where will they make up the difference? If the schools lose anymore, they are going to suffer even more than they already do. If they don’t take it from the schools, where else will they take it? They won’t just eliminate a huge source of income and walk away. This has been a big debate for me and I’m not sure which way it will go.
Thanks for the post. Have a great day!
Thanks for sharing, Jennifer! That is a tough ballot measure. I think a lot of us are making tough decisions and trying to think of how our decisions now will affect those who come after us. After all, it isn’t just about us!
Our local elections are very important this year. In the primaries we had an incumbent mayor lose by 1 vote. Every single vote counts.
You make a great point, Amber! Local elections really are very important. Sometimes we get caught up in the presidential race and forget that.
Yeah, it’s more important than ever to look at who represents you locally. Congress is vitally important, but country attorneys, corporation commissioners, and even the state legislature have big impacts on your everyday life.
Thanks for weighing in Colin! The machinery of government at the national level often moves slower and with less impact. At the local level, we often see changes that do affect us more directly.
I just want a government that will leave me alone. Unfortunately, that ship sailed years ago.
:) A nice thought, by and large. But you are right. That’s not happening any time ever.
