Liverpool’s Fernando Torres celebrates the game-winning goal against Sunderland on August 16

In case you were caught up watching Michael Phelps and the Olympics today, you might have missed (or forgot to watch) the opening games of the 2008-09 English Premier League season. So what if there is soccer in the Olympics? Yes, Major League Soccer is happening now in the U.S., but there’s just something about the EPL that is really special.

In the first day of matches, a few familiar names finished in the win column. Two perennial favorites, Arsenal and Liverpool, each picked up shutout victories. Arsenal received a goal in the fourth minute from Samir Nasri, which held up for the game winner against West Bromwich Albion. Liverpool secured their 1-0 win over Sunderland after Fernando Torres found the back of the net.
