ESPN’s Titletown

You can tell that it’s summertime…. How? Because ESPN is running some ridiculous segment during SportsCenter and hyping it to be the most important thing you’ll ever see. This year – ESPN is trying to figure out which city in the United States is ‘Titletown’.
I’m more interested in more baseball highlights than shoving this stuff in my face. Do I really think that Palo Alto, California has a chance to beat Los Angeles (which Tommy Lasorda claimed was the sports capital of the WORLD) for this ridiculous award? What about Lawrence, Kansas? What qualifies them for such an honor?
Last year, ESPN pushed a segment on us everyday about which athlete is ‘NOW’. It was a bracket style tournament which relied on fan voting. It was a big waste of time and something that I just did not care about. During those segments, I had to turn over to CNN or FoxSports Net to get real sports news.
Why can’t ESPN stick to the basics? Leave the other stuff to bloggers and off-beat magazines or TV shows (like Outside the Lines or ESPN The Magazine).
Here’s a reason why this is so ridiculous… Because you get people (like this girl from Valdosta, Georgia) who thinks their town is the best for Titletown USA.
