Example of NLP in Action

I love fun, everyday examples of things. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is something I’ve seen more than a few networking people espouse as being an amazing way to get new clients.

While this is true, I think it’s not as authentic as being yourself.

First, if you don’t know what NLP is, watch the following video. After Derren Brown does his thing with the suspicious guy, they play part of the video the second time explaining what he is doing. So make sure to watch through to the end to really understand how the trick that’s not a trick at all happens.

While this works, when you use words that are naturally your own instead of contrived words to get the maximum effect from someone else, you will be more memorable, because no one uses the same words and phrases you do. If you’re just trying to be a sleazebag and close some deals, NLP is right for you. But being yourself is the way to be remembered for who you are. This makes networking more than a business exercise, and it allows you to make friends instead of just getting a check.

Being yourself makes life better.
