Expectations for Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever should have its pig cops, among other things.

So you’ve now seen Duke Nukem Forever in action. Sure, the camera was shaking when Jace Hall gave us a peek, but I’m sure you all had your own impressions regarding the shooter. Let me ask you this:

In this age of complex physics engines, multiplayer, “smarter” AI, real-time shadows, and other standard FPS features, what are your expectations for Duke Nukem Forever?

Since this is a blog, let me share with you my expectations:

  • I expect want the game to use “old” conventions like health bars and med packs. All these new-fangled gimmicks like regeneration and having no health bars are just an effort to completely remove the old heads-up display to make shooters “more realistic “ even if they’re farther from it.
  • Pig cops, porn stores, and hookers.
  • Tons of post-release add ons.
  • A complex physics engine, multiplayer, “smarter” AI, real-time shadows, and all those new visual effects designed to push PCs on their knees.

Don’t ask me why I want the punishing eye candy, since I’ve been complaining about it like everyone else. In some ways, I just want 3D Realms to make the most of the 12-years-and-running development. It looks like I’ll be getting the eye candy—at least that’s what 3D Realms founder George Broussard said.

So what are your expectations for Duke Nukem Forever?

  1. Forever…..not just a name, a prediction on how long it will take to create the game.

  2. Mike says:

Amen, Anna. ;) There is a part of me that remains hopeful now that Jace Hall has actually played DNF, but I try to suppress it.

For one thing, I don’t know if it’s the first-ever hands-on for the game. With the game’s legendary development time, even a hands-on is not enough to guarantee that DNF is really coming out.

  3. Alex says:

No squad controls. No cover system. No heavy forced strategy a la RB6. I want the Shrinker (SO HAPPY IT’S STILL THERE). I want to kick ass and chew bubble gum.

Basically…I want classic Duke Nukem 3D with better controls, better graphics (though with an option for old sprite graphics would be hot), explosions, and maybe some destructible environments. :-)
