Facebook Applications Part 2

I originally blogged about the new applications for Facebook and how they can be used for business here.

Now I want to step back and have some fun and talk about all the different applications I keep getting invited to use on my page. None of these are really business applicable, but I figured it would be fun to switch it up a little bit tonight. Some of these are pretty cool, others are pretty useless, in fact some are pretty damn lame. I think some of the novelty of this will wear off, which will only slow Facebook’s takeover the free world, dashing Aaron Brazell’s dreams.

Here are all the pending application requests I have:

Election 08- A way to track and follow a Presidential candidate with updated news alerts. You get the added bonus of seeing who your friends are voting for.

Verdict:
Lame, the last thing I want to know is who my friends are voting for, it scares me to know their political affiliation.

My Questions
- You can instantly find out what your friends think about whatever issue you can come up with using this friends polling application.

Verdict: I kind of like it, I think it is unobtrusive as it sits under your picture, kind of a fun thing.

Flixster- It allows you to see how your friends rated various movies along with adding your own movie ratings to your page.

Verdict: Great, I get to see who rented “Earnest Goes to Camp” last. I actually do like this plug in a lot, it is always nice to find a diamond in the rough to view.

Moods- Isn’t updating your status enough, we need emoticon moods now?

Verdict: Horrible.

Hot or Not- You can rate users using HotorNot.com, hmmm rating users on a social networking site… where have I heard that before? Maybe the will make one where you can create a top friends list too, oh wait…

Verdict: If you are as vain as I am you will love it, otherwise not so much. Kidding, this is the lamest plug in ever…

Wait I stand corrected, I didn’t know about X Me: A plug in that allows you to “hug” or do something else to another Facebook member instead of poking them.

Verdict: I wonder if I can install it and then stab the person that sent it to me?

Finally we come to my favorite application I am Hungry- You can announce it to the world that you are hungry and want to eat.

It posts the message announcing your hunger and you can arrange going out to eat with one of your friends. Forget picking up the phone and calling them to invite them to go eat, you can just wait for them to log into facebook while you waste away malnourished.

Outstanding.

So that was a fun little look at the different applications I have been invited to use on Facebook…

Tomorrow I will be back with a little more serious tone. :)

    Hey Kevin,

I’d love your feedback on this application: http://ucdavis.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=2406256883

It lets you fight your buddies on Facebook for any random reason, lets your buddies support you in fights and allows people to just mess with eachother without picking a fight :)

  2. Kevin says:

So you can pick fights and people need to pick sides? It sounds like a family reunion.

  3. Atif Nazir says:

ahah, dysfunctional families are the in-thing, right? :) well, you can pick fights and your friends can take sides, or you can just mess with people by whipping them or practicing your kungfu on them :P

This is a great article. I am trying to learn how to work the social networks without being spammy. This looks like a good resource.

Kevin – can you review my facebook application:

You can get your celebrity look-alike from your facebook photo albums (or friend’s albums). It also allows you to vote on these, see the best matches of the day, or use the app from your mobile phone.

These guys have built one also worthy of note: http://apps.facebook.com/thenewsroom

dude, “I am Hungry” is your favorite app? wtf are you smokin’ over there?!

  8. Kevin says:

Mark this was put out after the first round of apps came out, and I was being sarcastic with it. Most of the apps are garbage, I am preparing another list shortly

Kevin – I’m glad you’re doing this. I actually found your page by googling “Facebook apps are spam”. I don’t understand why the majority of people seem to fully endorse these things. I’ve avoided them like the plague because I think they make what was once a clean interface, extremely tacky (a throwback to MySpace, the social network I actually still prefer.) I’ve only added one application to my Facebook page. . . and it’s Radar. I like that I can take an image with my camera phone wherever I happen to be, and send it directly to my profile. Of course. . . I’m guessing for anyone to actually SEE those images – they have to add Radar to their page, too. . . . I don’t appreciate that little stipulation AT ALL. I protest.
