Jeremy Newberry, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons about five weeks ago, has been forced to retire after sustaining a serious knee injury — according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The 33-year-old offensive lineman wasn’t expected to start but he was signed to provide depth.
Newberry played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1998 to 2006. In 2007, he joined the Oakland Raiders and started 14 games. Last season, he appeared in all 16 games for the San Diego Chargers. He started three of those contests — the last three games of the 2008 NFL season.
In his decade in the league, Newberry started 107 games. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, he mostly played center on the offensive line.
Considering the high expectations for the Falcons offense this upcoming year, the knee injury is bad timing for both Newberry and Atlanta. With quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner, tight end Tony Gonzalez and wide receiver Roddy White, the Falcons should be able to put touchdowns on the board.
