Fallout 3’s Bloody Mess perk is a bloody mess

I love Fallout. I played the first two games with gusto, and I’m looking forward to the third part. Others gamers worry that Fallout 3 would just be “Oblivion with guns” because it’s also being developed by Bethesda so perhaps the video would change your minds.

However, I do have a new concern with Fallout 3.

The animation of the characters doesn’t look very good at this point. And what’s with the Bloody Mess perk that kicked in when an enemy was shot in the head with a sniper rifle? I can understand when a cranium explodes like a watermelon when hit by such firearms, but why did the entire body fall apart?

If you’re reading this Bethesda, please note—the effects of Bloody Mess SHOULD have a basis. If an enemy is shot in the foot (or any other extremity) and the bad guy’s hit points run out, the entire corpse SHOULD NOT explode.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate if this is what happens instead: the entire foot that was shot explodes, bone fragments in said foot splinters, the body loses balance and tips over, then the head hits the ground and the enemy’s neck is broken violently. Feel free to make the broken neck’s angle as grotesque as possible. Now that’s an appropriate Bloody Mess.

I would love to hear any other ideas to make that bloodier. And please keep it in context.

  1. Klopzi says:

Back in Fallout 1 & 2, a critical hit to the head (or eye) would result in the head exploding. But I remember a critical hit to the chest resulted in 3/4 chunk of torso exploding outwards from the wound. I’m not sure about the legs though – I always went for the eyes!

Hopefully this more realistic (and frighteningly gruesome) aspect of the game will find its way into what constitutes a “bloody mess”.

For what it’s worth, Fallout 3 looks like it will be awesome!

  2. Whoever thinks it’s going to be like Oblivion just because it was it’s being created by Bethesda needs to be slapped.

I know the game’s supposed to look desolate and all (since it’s a post-apocalyptic world), but I’m just a bit worried with the overall look.

I’m particularly concerned with the overall stiffness of the character models. Here’s to Fallout 3 blowing all of us (staunch fans included) away.
